Applications by Turkish nationals under the ECAA – Ankara Agreement
The ECAA (European Community Association Agreement) was signed between the European Union and Turkey in 1963 to promote social and economic links between the European Economic Community and Turkey. Under the ECAA, Turkish nationals can enter or stay in the UK to establish themselves in business or as workers.
ECAA Turkish Businessperson Visa
Turkish nationals can apply to enter or stay in the UK if they want to set up a new business or join an existing business under the Turkish ECAA business category.
In order to qualify, you must be able to demonstrate that:
- you genuinely intend to set up business in the UK and that you have the skills and ability necessary for it;
- you have sufficient funds required to establish and run the business; and
- you will have sufficient funds from your share of the profits from the business to support yourself and your family members, if applicable, without you having to take up another job.
If your application is approved, you will be granted a visa for an initial period of 12 months.
You can apply to extend your stay in the UK as a Turkish Businessperson if you can demonstrate that you meet similar requirements to those above and that your business has already been established now. If these criteria are met, a three-year visa extension will be granted.
Settlement – ECAA Businessperson
On completing four years continuous residence as an ECAA businessperson in the UK, you can apply for settlement.
ECAA Turkish Worker Visa
For an application to be made under the worker provisions of the Turkish ECAA, you must already be in the UK on a valid visa that allows you to work (for e.g. student, Tier 1, or Tier 2 visa). You can then apply to extend your stay as a worker if you have been legally employed for one year with the same employer in the UK. If your application is successful, you will be permitted to stay in the UK as a Turkish ECAA worker to work for the same employer.
As a Turkish ECAA worker, you can change your employer after three years, provided you continue to work in the same profession. After four years of legal employment, you are free to take up any employment with any employer in the UK.
Settlement – Turkish Worker
This category does not lead to settlement. A worker who has completed 4 years’ employment may be granted further leave of up to a maximum of 3 years if they continue to meet the provisions of the ECAA.
